THE NATURAL WAY TO TAME A TODDLER

It is normal for toddlers to have tantrums brought on by feelings of frustration anger and jealousy but the terrible twos needn't be so terrible, say complementrary therapists. Clare Garner looks at ways of keeping tempers in check

Jin Shin Jyutsu

Whenever a child is unwell or unhappy, a mother naturally feels the need to touch them. Jin Shin Jyutsu, and ancient Japanese hands-on art of harmonising the life energy in the body, can teach a mother ways of holding her child which maximise the power of touch.

According to Jin Shin Jyutsu, the most effective action for a mother, if their child is having tantrums, is to set aside time to sit quietly with him on her lap. She should gently place her right hand underneath the base of her child's spine and her left hand on her child's belly button. It's not a difficult position for mother or child but it is important that all the mother's attention is on the child.

Jin Shin Jyutsu maintains that energy flows through the body in a particular pattern. We all have 26 "safety energy locks" along energy pathways that feed life into our bodies. If a child has a tantrum it is a sign that one or more of these locks has become blocked.

There are also sequences involving holding one of the child's fingers or toes for up to 20 minutes befor bed. The particular finger or toe depends on the nature of the problem. I would establish which is appropriate by talking to the mother about the tantrums and then touching the child's body briefly.
